I’ve been raising Quarter Horses for over 40 years now in Montana, one of the last places to find that good old ranch horse breeding. Once you have a chance to meet and work with one of these ranch horses, you'll not want to work with anything else. I still have a couple speed bred mares I trained for Polo competitions, but now we breed a lot of foundation-bred horses.  Most of them have a lot of cow in their pedigrees. 

 

Waldo crosses well on the mares he’s been bred to over the years.  Most of the mares carry Hancock, Driftwood and the King Fritz/Chex breeding.  Besides their pedigree, our mares were carefully hand selected for their overall qualities, conformation, people oriented, gorgeous head, and bones to last.  We also wanted mares that would produce athletic foals with calm and gentle dispositions. These mares produce dark horses with black feet with little to no white. 

 

Our aim is to produce more ranch type horses, like Waldo.  We don’t just produce registered foals, with Waldo, he improves what he’s bred to.  

Rockin MZ Broodmare Selection Criteria

 

The decision to retain a broodmare is based on the following:

  1. Conformation

  2. Pedigree

  3. How well (gelding) siblings perform

  4. Her show or race record, if shown or raced

  5. Siblings' show or race records

  6. Quality and performance of offspring (retention over time)

Reference Sire

 

Black Weasel is a big EE Homozygous black horse standing 16 hands and weighing 1350 # with a great disposition. I liked this horse so much that we have 6 mares with his breeding.

Smokin Plum Dandy

"Dandy" is a gorgeous blue roan mare that has Mr. Gun Smoke and Doc Bar on her papers. She is a cow-bred horse with a beautiful head, quick mover, muscular/athletic, big hip, and bones to last! She has produced beautiful blue roan foals that are very athletic.

Snippy Bay Frost

"Frosty" is a speed bred mare, has a frosty feature, sweet disposition, beautiful head, big hip, big boned, heavy muscled, produces roan foals to compete on, has big name performance horses on her pedigree. Her full brother won 90K and was voted best horse at the National Finals Rodeo in Vegas 2016.

"Moose" is a big stout back mare that produces very big foals.  She is a daughter of Black Weasels full brother Billy Three Irons and out of a Sugar Bars, Cowboy, Peppy mare.  She has King Fritz & Poco Bueno breeding with Sugar Bars, Leo Hancock on top and bottom.

Jo Rollin Jet

Jo Rollin' Jet AKA "Jo Jo" is a big blue roan mare, heavy muscled and produces big beautiful foals every year! She is High Rollin Roany bred and grows a very long gorgeous mane. 

JM Dally Fourosox

"Dally" is a gorgeous tall blue roan mare with a beautiful head, athletic, sound, exceptional looking, kind hearted, and willing to please. She is bred for all kinds of tasks on the ranch and in competition.

Hancock Easy Ann

"Annie" is a tall bay roan mare with a big heart, soft eyes, eager to learn, loves people, built for speed, bones to last, and is a full sister to Maybelline. Her dam has a "lot" of speed in her pedigree and has nursed orphan foals for us. (This filly's older sister did too). She comes from a excellent mare lineage and would make award winning barrel horse.

Frosty Top Hand is a speed bred mare, has a frosty feature, sweet disposition, beautiful head, big hip, big boned, heavy muscled, has big name performance horses on her pedigree. Her pedigree won 90K and was voted best horse at the National Finals Rodeo in Vegas 2016.

"Nugget" is a tall athletic mare  with a calm disposition and has many big named cutting horses on her pedigree. Docks Hickory top & bottom and is a full sister Cricket.

"Cricket" is a nice muscular mare with many big named cutting horses on her pedigree. Docks Hickory top & bottom. She has a very calm disposition just like her sister.
